Truth is such a rare thing; it is delightful to tell it. ~~Emily Dickinson

July 4, 2011, Perugia, Italy. Curt Knox and Edda Mellas were informed that their Slander trial would begin January 2012. Charges stem from a 2009 interview with a British paper in which Curt and Edda repeated Amanda’s charge that a female officer struck her twice during the illegal interrogation.

The Vashon Island Strawberry Festival literally started off with a bang at the Beer Garden Friday at 6pm. A long standing grove of trees next to Vashon Village lost one of its tree trunks when it fell west towards Vashon Highway, falling across the power lines knocking out power to the town of Vashon.

Ferry riders should plan for traffic control changes at the Fauntleroy ferry terminal in West Seattle starting July 17.

Due to budget cuts, Washington State Patrol (WSP) cadets will no longer be available to sort traffic headed to the Fauntleroy toll booths. Drivers will now be directed into the proper lanes for departure by Washington State Ferries (WSF) tollbooth attendants as they buy their tickets.

Giuliano Mignini, the Public Minister of Perugia Italy, is found guilty of Abuse of Power and Corruption for falsely accusing and prosecuting Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito for the murder of Meredith Kercher.
Well, at least that is the fervent wish of every one of Amanda’s family and friends on Vashon Island.

"Amanda Knox is just one person. She is not a war or an oil field. But in a spectacle that has unfolded before the eyes of the world, the rights, under Italian law, of that one American citizen have been trampled on beyond belief. The ongoing neglect of American consular officials in Rome to address this injustice sends a high profile message—our government officials are too busy taking care of business, to take care of our people

Fireworks season is upon us once again. The community of Vashon did a great job last year keeping safe during fireworks season with no fireworks related incidents requiring anything more than a band aid. For the last six years Vashon’s fireworks related incident rate has been very low which is common where fireworks are thoughtfully regulated by the government.

The Vashon Youth Council announced today that they will officially close on July 29, 2011 after 12 years of service to the Vashon Island community. For several years the organization has struggled to raise sufficient funds to continue operations

The Monster of Florence was a heinous serial killer who mutilated his female victims and terrified Tuscany from 1968 to 1985; it is now the most famous cold case in Italy. Here in the Puget Sound, we knew this fear from the 70’s to the 90’s as two serial killers left their mark upon our lives, but we never expected a twist of fate to link us to a foreign murderer.

The Vashon Park District will break ground on Saturday, June 11that 10:00 a.m. at a gold shovel ceremony to begin the construction of the Vashon Fields. The project is a 4.59 acre renovation of the fields adjacent to the Harbor School to be used for soccer, baseball, softball, football, and lacrosse.

Over the weekend, the Water Taxi crew discovered a small crack in the hull plating of the Rachel Marie. The King County Marine Division has made arrangements to use another vessel, the Victoria Express, while the Rachel Marie is being repaired.

These are not the best of times—there’s enough bad news to make us all, either pull our hair out or just pull the covers over our heads, roll over and groan.  The pictures coming out of Japan after the recent earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear crisis are terrifying and remind us of how vulnerable we all are to the forces of nature.

Curt Knox, Amanda’s father, was back in Perugia for the beginning of her Slander trial and for a hearing on her continuing Appeal.   She and her friend, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher in 2009 and they have repeatedly asserted their innocence.

DDES is taking public comment on the proposals through Friday, June 10.

June 1st. Washington State Ferry Public Meeting, 6:30-8:30 pm at McMurray. David Moseley will speak about the Legislative Session and possibly about the current construction of the 64 car ferries.

Never having been to a Rotary meeting, but knowing that we have a strong club on Vashon, I was pleasantly surprised by 50+ who arrived before 7am for a breakfast meeting. Along with the club’s business

Seeking - neighbors, businesses, and island organizations to join in this youth leadership project sponsored by Vashon Healthy Community Network.

On May 6, 2011, Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito will have spent 1,277 days in prison for a murder they did not commit.  One week longer than Meredith Kercher’s actual murderer, Rudy Guede.

Joe McDermott is coming to hear our opinions about the proposed changes in the structure of the UACs. This is our opportunity to let him know what we think. VMICC meeting Monday April 25th, at 7PM at McMurray.

After 20 years Wendy Braicks is leaving the helm of the Park District. Read on as Wendy explains and thanks the community.

November 2, 2007, Via Della Pergola 7, Perugia, Italy, 10:30am.  Amanda Knox, a West Seattleite with ties to Vashon Island, arrives at her apartment; she had hurried home to shower and change, having been gone all night.  It was a holiday weekend so she and Raffaele Sollecito, who was waiting at back his apartment, were taking a drive to visit the ancient Roman city of Gubbio.

Wednesday, October 31, 2007, Halloween.  The university students in Perugia, Italy are in a holiday mood.  Meredith Kercher, Amanda Knox and their friends attended a Halloween pub-crawl until the wee hours and were looking forward to the three-day weekend.

Amanda Knox and her friend, Raffaele Sollecito, were wrongly convicted in 2009 of murdering her British roommate and friend, Meredith Kercher.  They are serving 26-year and 25-year prison sentences near Perugia, Italy.  Rudy Guede, the real killer, is serving only 16 years for the murder; his sentence shortened after the Perugian court encouraged him to ‘apologize’ to the Kercher’s for murdering their daughter.  I am not kidding.

It is surreal watching Curt Knox on television, look away and normalcy resumes on Vashon.  Look back and Curt is talking about his daughter’s appeal, cautiously optimistic that an upcoming independent review of the DNA will exonerate Amanda and her friend, Raffaele Sollecito.  The two are serving prison sentences, near Perugia, Italy, for the murder of Amanda’s flatmate, Meredith Kercher, in November of 2007.
