Love In The Afternoon at Church of Great Rain

Church of Great Rain promises love in the afternoon with heartfelt humor at a special Valentines Show on Sunday, February 12 at 4PM at Open Space for Arts and Community. The show will feature guest appearances by mythologist Michael Meade and musician Ian Moore.

Church of Great Rain is Vashon Island’s own music, comedy and variety show, described as "A Prairie Home Companion meets Saturday Night Live with a Northwest flavor and a Monty Python twist." The shows features the Church House Band, twisted news and irreverent views by the Holy Roller Radio Players, amazing guest artists and an inspiring impromptu sermon by the preacher. Audience members are invited to join in the fun by writing on a seasonal topic to be read aloud during the show.

Over sixty uniquely talented actors, musicians, writers, and technical crew contribute to these wonderful collaborations. Church of Great Rain began performing at Open Space on Valentine’s Day 2010 and the sold out December 11, 2011 Holiday Show marked the twelfth performance at the beloved Island venue.

Michael Meade

Michael Meade, is a Vashon Island resident and renowned storyteller, author, and scholar of mythology, anthropology, and psychology. He combines hypnotic storytelling, drumming, street-savvy perceptiveness, and spellbinding interpretations of ancient myths with a deep knowledge of cross-cultural rituals. He has an unusual ability to distill and synthesize these disciplines, tapping into ancestral sources of wisdom and connecting them to the stories we are living today.

Michael is the author of Fate and Destiny, The World Behind the World; editor, with James Hillman and Robert Bly, of Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart; and editor of Crossroads: A Quest for Contemporary Rites of Passage. Meade is co-founder of the original Minglement on Vashon and is founder of Mosaic Multicultural Foundation, a nonprofit network of artist, activists, and community builders that encourages greater understanding between diverse peoples.

Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple, says "Michael Meade is magic. Unlike anyone else one is likely to encounter, Michael is one of the greatest living teachers of our time. There is brilliant medicine in his storytelling."

Ian Moore

Musical guest Ian Moore is a guitarist and singer-songwriter from Austin now living on Vashon Island. Ian studied fiddle as a child and his music contains elements of folk, rock and roll, world music, and blues. After playing guitar in Joe Ely’s touring band and appearing on a studio album, he spent time in Austin with his own groups Moment’s Notice and The Ian Moore Band. After moving to Vashon in 2004, portions of his album To Be Loved were recorded in his home studio. Ian has played with such notable musicians as the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and ZZ Top, and appeared in Billy Bob Thornton’s movie Sling Blade.

Tim Taylor of JAM Magazine says, "Ian Moore is one of the most interesting artists of the last twenty years. El Sonido Nuevo, the album Moore released in 2011 with his band, the Lossy Coils, is a guitar-fueled, energetic record with beautiful melodies, intelligent lyrics, and exceptional vocal harmonies. Ian’s passion for music is unmatched. Money, critics, or industry trends will never sway his attitude and musical integrity. He is a true Texas treasure, and his live shows are amazing."
